Gold Drops to Near One-Month Low: This Week's Choppy Ride and the Smart Buyer's Playbook
24K gold in Pakistan slipped to near a one-month low on Saturday, ending a choppy week shaped by hotter-than-expected US inflation, a firm dollar and Middle East tensions. Here is what moved the rate, and the smart way to buy when prices keep swinging.

This Week in Gold: What Actually Happened
On Saturday 17 October 2026, the 24K gold rate in Pakistan closed around Rs432,500 per tola, down about Rs1,500 in a single day, sitting just above the one-month low of Rs432,000 touched on 13 October. It was the end of a choppy week: the rate stood near Rs437,500 on 10 October and shed roughly Rs5,000 over the week.
The mood was unsettled globally too. Gold went through what market watchers called its longest stretch of consecutive losses in more than three decades, rallying on Friday but still failing to recover the previous week's levels. In short: nobody, anywhere, had a calm week in gold.
Why the Rate Swung: The Forces Behind the Moves
The biggest pressure came from the United States. Inflation data came in hotter than expected, 3.7% year on year, which pushed up US Treasury yields and kept the dollar firm. When yields rise and the dollar strengthens, gold generally struggles, because it pays no interest and gets more expensive for buyers holding other currencies.
Late in the week the picture flipped: bond yields eased, traders scaled back bets on another US rate hike, and gold recovered some ground. At the same time, tensions in the Middle East, including disruption to shipping near the Strait of Hormuz, gave gold its classic safe-haven support. Two opposing forces, one choppy market.
Where the Rate Stands Right Now
Today is Sunday, and international markets are closed, so the spot price is unlikely to move much until Monday. That generally means the local rate holds near Saturday's close, but rates can shift quickly, so check today's confirmed rate with your sarafa dealer before you buy or sell.
For context: over the last 30 trading days the rate touched a high of Rs454,700 per tola on 19 September and a low of Rs432,000 on 13 October. Saturday's 22K jewellery-grade rate sat near Rs396,458 per tola. Small differences between sources and cities are normal: the benchmark is the same, but local markets add their own making charges and spreads.
The Smart Buyer's Playbook for Falling Rates
• Do not buy or sell in a panic. Decide your need first: when is the wedding or occasion, how much weight do you need, and what is your budget? A falling rate is only an opportunity if it fits your plan.
• Consider buying in stages. Instead of spending your whole budget on one day, split it across two or three purchases. Your average rate may work out better than a single all-or-nothing bet.
• Always confirm the same-day rate with the dealer, verify the karat (21K or 22K is standard for jewellery), get the piece weighed on a certified scale in front of you, and take a proper receipt with weight, karat and rate written on it.
• Remember that making charges (banwai) are added on top of the per-tola rate, so your final bill will be higher than the headline rate. Ask for the full breakup before you commit. Some jewellers may quote a low rate and recover it in making charges.
Mistakes to Avoid When Prices Keep Swinging
• Do not miss your own deadline waiting for a further fall. If a wedding or family occasion is fixed, buying on time at a fair rate beats chasing the perfect bottom and running out of time.
• If you are selling old gold, do not panic-sell on a single day's drop. Watch the trend over a few days, compare buyback rates from two or three dealers, and only then decide.
