FBR Is Now Watching Jewellery Posts on Instagram: What Every Gold Buyer Should Know
A 40-member FBR Lifestyle Monitoring Cell is scanning Instagram, TikTok and YouTube for lavish jewellery spending. Here's what the Reuters-reported crackdown means for ordinary gold buyers — and how to protect yourself.

The News: FBR's 40-Member Cell Starts Watching Social Media
Reuters reported from Karachi this week that a 40-investigator Lifestyle Monitoring Cell at Pakistan's Federal Board of Revenue has started scouring Instagram, TikTok and YouTube posts, matching influencers, celebrities, realtors and businesspeople against their tax filings. Diamond sets and a drone light show at a near-million-dollar wedding have become evidence for the tax authorities.
A senior FBR official told Reuters: "It's open-source – their Instagram accounts are a public declaration," adding that tax evasion cases can be opened up in a matter of hours.
What the Cell Actually Does
According to an internal document seen by Reuters, the unit was formally set up in September with a mandate to "systematically monitor, scour and analyse data from major social media platforms" — identifying people who display wealth but are not registered for tax or whose declared income appears incongruous with their spending.
The cell builds digital profiles of suspects, assesses the money behind their lifestyles, and prepares reports that can be used for tax or money-laundering investigations. Its central evidence database stores screenshots and timestamps.
Why Ordinary Jewellery Buyers Should Pay Attention
This is not just about influencers. Bridal sets, wedding-day photos and unboxing videos are exactly the kind of posts under review. Officials said one wedding under review carried a price tag of nearly Rs248 million.
If the spending visible online does not line up with your declared income, FBR may ask you to explain the source of the money. The backdrop is rising enforcement pressure to meet IMF-backed 2026 budget targets — less than 2 per cent of the country pays income tax.
The Parallel Crackdown on Jewellers
PPI News Agency reports that of roughly 60,000 jewellers identified, only 21,000 are registered with FBR, and just 10,524 have filed returns. The first phase targets 900 jewellers in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad and Multan; nearly 100,000 affluent individuals — including hosts of extravagant weddings — are under scrutiny, and even wedding attire costing up to USD 20,000 may be investigated.
For buyers, the message is that the trade is being forced into documentation. Buy from proper, registered jewellers and insist on correct billing — an undocumented bargain can become your problem later.
Protect Yourself: The Jewellery Buyer's Checklist
• Always take a proper bill showing net gold weight, karat/purity, the day's rate, making charges and taxes as separate lines — not one lump sum.
• Keep receipts and certificates for years; photograph or scan them — if FBR ever asks about a set you posted, the bill is your answer.
• Keep large purchases consistent with your declared income; if the family pooled money for a bridal set, keep a simple written record of who paid what.
• Document gifted and inherited jewellery — "it was a gift" with no record is a weak defence if the set appears in your posts.
Should You Stop Posting?
No — celebrating is not a crime. The advice from jewellers who have watched this cycle before: post the joy, keep the papers straight. Before buying, always confirm today's rate with your sarafa (the latest announced rate: Rs424,536 per tola for 24K gold on 23 October 2026, per the All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association; rates move daily, so verify before you buy).
