5 Traps to Avoid When Buying Gold in Pakistan
On 19 September 2026, gold in Pakistan reportedly rebounded sharply to Rs460,336 per tola — and on 25 September 2026, the 24K sarafa rate stood around Rs448,336 per tola. When prices move by thousands o Here are five traps buyers commonly face — and how to dodge each one.f rupees in a single week, even a small trick at the counter can cost you serious money.

Trap 1: The "today's rate" that isn't today's rate

Some shops quote a rate slightly above the official sarafa rate, blaming "market fluctuation." In reality, the difference is pure extra profit. Protect yourself: Check the live rate from 2–3 independent sources before you walk in, and ask the shop to show you the rate they are using — in writing.

Trap 2: Inflated making charges

Making charges (mazdoori) are where many buyers lose money quietly. Some shops charge 22K making charges on a 21K item, or inflate "wastage" from 3% to 10%. Always ask: "What is the making charge per gram, in writing?" If they hesitate, walk away. Protect yourself: Get the making charges and net weight in writing before paying. Verbal promises mean nothing.

Trap 3: The purity switch

You pay for 22K but receive 21K — the oldest trick in the book. The difference is invisible to the eye but very visible in resale value. Protect yourself: Buy only hallmarked items and ask for a purity certificate. If the shop cannot provide one, that is your answer.

Trap 4: The "no receipt, cash discount" offer

A shop offers you a lower price if you pay cash with no receipt. You save a little today — and lose everything if you ever need to resell, claim warranty, or prove ownership. Protect yourself: Always take a proper printed receipt with the shop's name, weight, purity, rate, and making charges clearly mentioned.

Trap 5: The exchange-rate trap on old gold

When exchanging old jewellery, some shops undervalue your old gold while overpricing the new piece — you lose on both sides of the deal. Protect yourself: Get your old gold weighed and valued separately first, agree on that price in writing, and only then negotiate the new purchase.

The golden rule

A trustworthy jeweller answers every question patiently, shows rates in writing, and never rushes you. If you feel pressured, confused, or rushed — walk out. There are plenty of honest shops; your money deserves one of them.
