22K vs 21K vs 24K Gold: Which One Should You Buy in Pakistan?
The first question at any jewellery shop is usually this: "What's the difference between 22K and 21K? Which one should I buy?" Here's the complete answer — so you can decide with confidence before spending your money.

What does "karat" actually mean?

Gold is measured in 24 parts. 24K means 24 out of 24 parts are gold — 99.9% pure. The lower the karat, the less gold and the more alloy (mixed metals). Alloy isn't a bad thing — it's what makes gold strong enough to wear.

24K — Pure, but soft

99.9% pure gold with the deepest yellow colour. But it's so soft that it's not suitable for jewellery — a ring or bangle worn daily can lose its shape. 24K is for bars, coins and investment — not for wearing.

22K — Pakistan's bridal standard

91.6% gold. Its rich yellow colour is why most wedding sets are made in 22K. It also has the best resale value — jewellers pay the highest rates for 22K when you sell. But it's soft, so it needs careful handling; not ideal for rough daily use.

21K — The balance of beauty and strength

87.5% gold. Very popular in the Gulf countries and common in Pakistan too. Slightly less yellow than 22K, but noticeably stronger — often the better choice for everyday pieces like tops, rings and light sets. Priced a little lower than 22K.

18K — For diamonds and modern designs

75% gold. Diamond-studded jewellery is usually made in 18K because the stronger setting holds stones securely. Resale value is lower than 22K/21K — keep that in mind.

The straight answer: which one, when?

  • Bridal set / investment jewellery: 22K
  • Everyday jewellery: 21K
  • Saving gold as investment: 24K bars or coins
  • Diamond jewellery: 18K

3 things to always ask your jeweller

  1. Get the karat written on the bill — a verbal "it's 22K" is not enough.
  2. Ask making charges separately — jewellers often inflate weight by 10–15% under the name of "wastage." Insist the rate applies only on the net weight.
  3. Confirm today's rate — gold moves daily. (On 25 September 2026, 24K was trading around Rs448,300 per tola — but always check the rate on the day you buy.)

Final word

The most expensive gold isn't the purest one — it's the one that suits your purpose. 22K's glow for the bride, 21K's strength for every day. Buy with understanding, and you'll never regret it.Note: Gold rates change daily. This post was written in September 2026 — always confirm the current rate before buying.
